Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA)?

Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) refers to strains of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus that are susceptible to methicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics. MSSA stands for methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus. 

Unlike methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which has acquired resistance to methicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics, MSSA strains remain susceptible to these antibiotics.

MSSA infections can occur in various settings, including both healthcare and community settings. MSSA is a leading cause of skin and soft tissue infections, as well as respiratory infections, bloodstream infections, and other types of infections. 

Some common infections caused by MSSA include cellulitis, abscesses, wound infections, pneumonia, bacteremia, and endocarditis.

Treatment of MSSA infections typically involves antibiotics such as oxacillin, nafcillin, cefazolin, or other beta-lactam antibiotics to which MSSA strains are susceptible. 

However, the choice of antibiotics may vary depending on the severity of the infection, the site of infection, and local antibiotic resistance patterns.

Preventive measures to reduce the risk of MSSA infections include proper hand hygiene, wound care, infection control practices in healthcare settings, and appropriate use of antibiotics to prevent the emergence of resistance. 

Early recognition and treatment of MSSA infections are essential for preventing complications and improving patient outcomes.
